Errol Spence Jr. describes his bout with Manny Pacquiao as a "passing of the torch" event in which the departing superstar will hand over stardom to him. Spence (27-0, 21 KOs) will then be the next PPV star.
Errol claims that since Floyd Mayweather Jr. refused to fight him so he could take the torch from him, Spence will take it from Pacquiao (62-7-2, 39 KOs) next month in their battle on August 21st at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Pacquiao rose boxing prominence after taking the torch from Oscar De La Hoya in 2008. Pacquiao was a popular fighter before that bout, but he wasn't the mega-star he became after his eighth-round knockout of De La Hoya.
Interestingly, Mayweather Jr decided to retire with an easy fight against Andre Berto in September 2015 rather than facing Spence or Keith Thurman, two of the young lions at the moment who were ready to beat Mayweather and grab his torch/scalp to become the next star.
You might say that Mayweather was selfish in not fighting Spence or Thurman, but a defeat could have been too much for him to bear.
Mayweather has earned his undefeated record by being picky and avoiding taking on dangerous fighters in their primes.
Spence believes that Plan A will be successful.
“I feel like it's my time,” Spence told Manouk Akopyan on his optimism that he would defeat Pacquiao. “It wasn't my cup of tea to watch him fight. ‘Oh, I want to emulate that manner,' he said, since he was a fighter.
“His desire simply to fight and how fast he is,” Spence stated of his concerns about his fight with Pacquiao. “He's still going to pull the trigger. He's not afraid of anything. He's the kind of person that will battle and bite down and fight.
“I believe he's one of those people you have to pound into submission. When asked how he felt since his previous bout against Danny Garcia, Spence said, "I feel."
“It's going to be a great, exciting battle. When asked whether he had a Plan B for his bout with Pacquiao, Spence said, "Plan B and Plan C detract from Plan A."
“I think my Plan A will succeed, and if it doesn't, it'll be all-out war,” Spence added.
Errol hasn't revealed his strategy for the Pacquiao fight, but it's likely to be the same one he used to beat Mikey Garcia in March 2019.
Spence boxed the 5'6" Mikey from the outside, not allowing him to get near enough to deliver his huge power punches. Spence put forth a determined attempt to box Mikey for 12 rounds rather than slugging him.
Pacquiao Will Be Carrying The Torch
“Floyd did not pass the torch. Pacquiao will be the one to transfer the baton.
Spence explained. “I'm becoming a pay-per-view celebrity, and I'm becoming the person in the sport who will lead the sport.
“No, I want the best for Terence Crawford,” Spence replied when asked whether it makes him happy that he is receiving this chance but Crawford is not.
"I don't despise him. Terence has earned my undying admiration. When asked what percentage split he had in mind for a fight with Crawford, Spence said, "It's something we're not even thinking about right now."
“The objective is Manny Pacquiao, and it has been Manny Pacquiao for a few of months now. It is something on which we are entirely focused.
“We're not looking forward. When you gaze into the future, you get sidetracked. So it's Manny Pacquiao for the time being.
“So if we have questions about other individuals, we'll discuss about it after Manny Pacquiao,” Spence added.
Spence will very certainly beat Manny Pacquiao Boxing to become the sport's next big star. If Spence easily defeats Pacquiao, like the Filipino great did against De La Hoya, it will signify much more.
